For competition organisers · new this season

Run your competition, with or without the wifi.

Entries, pools, direct elimination and live results, in a web browser. It keeps working when the sports hall’s internet doesn’t.

Its pools, tableau and places, as anyone follows them on a phone, and as the hall’s big screen shows them.

The whole day, from check-in to the final.

  • Entries and check-in

Bring your entries in from a file, or add a fencer by their British Fencing number. Tick them off as they arrive, and seed from the ranking.

  • Pools

Drawn with clubmates kept apart, fenced in the usual bout order, and every score checked as it’s typed. One round or several, with a cut between.

  • Direct elimination

Tables of any size, seeded from the pools or straight from the ranking, with a bout for third place if you want one.

  • Live results

Fencers, coaches and parents follow every pool and table on their phones, at a short address. There’s a big-screen view for the hall.

  • Referees at the piste

Referees score their bouts and give cards from their own phones. The sheet fills in as they do.

  • Results out

Pool sheets, bout slips and the tableau on paper; the results as a spreadsheet and as the FIE’s XML.

Made for the sports hall.

  1. No internet needed

A whole competition runs on one laptop with no connection. The results go up when it comes back.

  2. Many laptops, one competition

The bout committee, the pistes and the results screen share one live copy. Cut off from each other, each keeps working, and they catch up when they meet.

  3. Nothing to install

It’s a web page. Open it on whatever laptops the club has: Windows, Mac or Chromebook.

The rules, as they’re written.

Pools are drawn and ranked as the FIE’s rules say, and the tableau is seeded from that ranking. An event is the rounds you give it: pools only, direct elimination only, or rounds of pools with cuts and a tableau to finish.

Questions organisers ask

Can we use it now?

Yes. A whole event can be run on it today: entries and check-in, pools, cuts, direct elimination, referees on their phones, live results and the results file. It’s new, so we’d like to hear from the first organisers to use it at a real competition.

What doesn’t it do yet?

Online entries and entry fees: bring your entry list in from a file, or add fencers by their British Fencing number. Repêchage, fencing for every place, and team events.

What will it cost?

Nothing. It’s free for every competition, with no limit on fencers, events, laptops or referees, and no card to give.

What will we need on the day?

A laptop with an up-to-date Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. Add more if you want scores typed in at the pistes, or a results screen in the hall.

How do we get ready the day before?

Open your competition on every laptop you’ll use while it’s online, and leave each signed in: then each opens it with no connection. Have paper pool sheets to hand, and download each event’s results as it finishes, so you hold your own copy.

What happens when the hall’s internet drops?

Nothing stops. Every laptop holds the whole competition and carries on. Live results pause, and catch up when the connection returns.

How do results reach British Fencing?

Download each event as the FIE’s XML, the same file Fencing Time and Engarde save, and send it to British Fencing as you send theirs. fency.events doesn’t send it for you yet.

Who do we ask for help?

Email [email protected]. We answer within two working days, and usually sooner. Tell us your competition’s date beforehand, and we’ll look out for your email that day.
